Underground 2 Revived online means two modes on the same project server. Free roam puts other players’ cars in Bayview when you turn it on. The game’s own Online menu creates and joins races without an EA account. TheGamer, the project notes, and October 2026 videos all show other people in the city. nfsu2.org is a different build and does not offer this. A 6,000-player ceiling is only in the project’s server notes.

No EA login on the public path. The Online menu skips the old login screens.

Evidence note: figures attributed only to one publication or to the project's own documentation are single-source reports. The project site, README and playing notes count as one source group. Sources and checked dates are shown with each fact.
I used Hans-Jørgen’s 21 October free-roam video and yod’s 24 October outrun video as the picture of other cars, then read section 6 and section 7 of PLAYING.md for the rules those videos do not spell out. The 27 October player endpoint is the only count I will quote, and only with the clock time.
Online, Free roam with others is off by default. The first Play asks once. Your name is what other players see. Empty means the profile name. Everyone has to use the same server address. Cars appear with names, the way the old LAN mode did. The server pairs you with the 32 nearest players. Names show within 100 m.
Main menu, Online, goes to the Online Main Menu under your name. Lobby lists games. Create Game or Refresh and Join Game. Ready, then the host presses Start Race. If some players are not ready, a 10-second countdown removes them. Up to 6 players. Drag stays at 4, or 3 on the three-lane track. Every track is open when you create a game, in either direction. A new game starts at 2 laps.
Rankings and the old messenger lists are stored by display name. The notes warn that a name is not an account: someone else can use it while you are offline. Set Online, Your name if you care which letters you race under.
nfsu2.org documents a single-player browser runtime without this multiplayer. nfsunderground2.site is a PS2 port with two-player rooms. Mixing those results into a review of nfsu2.xyz produces the wrong answer. The comparison is on the versions page.
