Profiles stay in the browser for the site address you play on. Cloud saves are optional: the page locks them with a keyphrase that starts with nfsu2-xyz- plus eight words, and there is no account. Download a zip backup before you clear site data. A PC profile can be restored from a zip of the local NFS Underground 2 folder. Issue 33 on the project repo records a case where a cloud choice deleted progress.

I read the Saves section of PLAYING.md against a Reddit thread where a player asked how to load a 100% career and was told to use Restore. VRacer’s 22 October video also shows a save restore. I am not publishing anyone’s keyphrase, and I cannot recover one. The project says nobody can look a lost phrase up.
Profiles and settings.ini go to the cloud. F12 screenshots, magazine covers, graphics options, fullscreen, resolution scale, frame cap, and controller settings stay in each browser. A phone and a PC keep their own device settings. If two browsers both changed a profile, the page asks which copy to keep and does not sync until you choose.
Before a cloud copy replaces the local one, the page keeps your local profiles for 30 days and offers Put back. A keyphrase unused for two years is deleted from the server. That retention line is only in the project notes.
Zip %LOCALAPPDATA%\NFS Underground 2, or one profile file inside it, and use Restore a backup. A same-named profile is replaced after a prompt. A profile from another game version is skipped. A save editor or a mod car triggers a warning because the browser build may crash or show the car wrong. Only restore a zip you made or trust.
Chrome may drop a site’s storage when the disk is nearly full. The page cannot see that. Firefox asks in the address bar; the Saves section mentions the prompt. Delete the game data on this PC frees the streamed files and leaves saves. Clearing site data, or the whole browsing history, is the action that removes local profiles.
VRacer walks through the nfsu2.xyz start page, a save restore, and an online race on 22 October 2026. Uploaded 2026-10-22. The player loads only after this click.
In the browser storage for nfsu2.xyz, unless you turned on cloud saves.
The project notes say no. There is no account and no lookup.
Restore a backup zip. A Reddit reply on r/NFSU2 pointed at the same Restore control. Do not download a save from a random file host.
The page sets each profile to Autosave once. If you switch the game back to Prompt or Off, it stays there.
One browser runs one game. A second tab says Open elsewhere and keeps Settings read-only.
